Through leadership, education and advocacy. By becoming a member you add your name to an expansive list of individuals, families, businesses and organizations who are igniting collective action that creates better lives for children and families.
One of those individuals is Heather Marcy, deputy director at Northland Family Help Center in Flagstaff.
Northland, which provides safe haven, advocacy, counseling and education services to promote and restore healthy relationships, recently took part in the Flagstaff City Council Proclamation ceremony declaring the month of January as Human Trafficking Awareness month. The organization also held its second annual breakfast fundraiser at Little America late last year.
Marcy first learned about the Coalition shortly after she joined Northland about 18 years ago
“I heard a lot about it from Beya Thayer, who was a president” of the Coalition’s board.
“She was my mentor (at Northland) and I saw how invested she was in the organization and that the Coalition serves a very important function in the community,” said Marcy, who joined the planning committee for the Coalition’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2022. “That’s when I became much more involved.”
Marcy, who currently serves as treasurer for the Coalition’s board, said she see’s the organization as a strong connector to the community and a valuable resource for Northland and other stakeholder groups.
“I see the Coalition bringing together government, social service provides and educators — everyone who is working to find better ways to serve youth,” Marcy said. “I feel the Coalition is really dynamic. It provides access to quality training and also community outreach through a multi-prong approach that is really important to bring people together to do the work.
“(The Coalition) sits at a lot of tables working on background issues, relaying information we need for our organization and the online trainings are immensely helpful, with access anytime you need them and on a lot of different topics.
Marcy said membership is a key component of the Coalition.
“It’s important for both organizations and individuals to commit to an organization,” she said. “That makes a statement to youth about the issues you care about.”
