Connections Spotlight — Interview with Iya Affo on ‘Historical Trauma’ during a time of Covid-19, Black Lives Matter

A total of 110 individuals representing staff, board members and supporters of the Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth took part in the first level of “Historical Trauma Special Certification” training held via Zoom on Aug. 20 and 24. The attendees represented a variety of children and family heath and social care service agencies throughout Coconino County.
 
In June, CCC&Y agreed to partner with Heal Historical Trauma to become a historical trauma certified agency, which included providing training to the non-profit organization.
 
The most recent training included “Culture and the Explosion of COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter,” “Historical Trauma including Colonization,” “Faces of Historical Trauma,” “Epigenetics,” “Social Determinants of Health,” “BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) Wellness and Structural Racisim” and “Healing.”

Following the session, CCC&Y conducted a Question & Answer interview with presenter Iya Affo, founder of Heal Historic Trauma, a culturalist and historic trauma specialist, who is also with Phoenix Rising in Residence (AZ). Here is that interview:

Connections Spotlight: CCC&Y presents series of no cost webinars for professionals, parents and youth on ACES, Mindfulness, other topics

The Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth has created a series of webinars for professionals, parents and youth, to skills that are needed now more than every in our current stay-safe-at home-society.

In our hour-long webinar on Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences; Hope in Resiliency, participants will learn how the effects of childhood trauma play out both personally for individuals, along with having tremendous costs for society. According to one participant:

“Though I am familiar with the topic of ACES, each time I participate in training, I learn something new. Connections Spotlight: Understanding How Positive Community Factors Can Prevent Substance Abuse in Youth

The Coconino Coalition for Children and Youth (CCC&Y) strives to prevent substance abuse and other negative outcomes in adulthood by understanding the effects of childhood traumatic experience and mobilizing community action. Research shows that Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, contribute to the likelihood of addiction. Sadly, however, Arizona ranks higher than the national average for children who have experienced ACEs. These can include childhood traumas such as abuse and neglect. In fact, according to the Arizona ACE Consortium, “It is estimated that nearly 70,000 children in Arizona have more than five ACEs.”

Connections Spotlight: Self-healing, -helping communities assisting students, families overcome coronavirus challenges

During times of crisis, people have an amazing ability to adapt, get over the shock and get to work to mitigate or solve the problem.

Such is the case with our current challenge, the coronavirus (COVID-19) emergency.

Stay-at-home orders, school closures and other issues have rapidly confronted everyone, from political leaders to emergency responders, parents and students.

And true to our nature, individuals and organizations are rapidly coming up with a variety of creative solutions to tackle such issues as feeding students who are unable to return to the classroom, and at-home and distance-learning options to continue the education of our youth.

Within this e-newsletter, our readers will find a variety of links to stories and resources to help us face the challenge of many of these issues and meet the mind, body and spirit needs of our community.

Connections Spotlight: CCC&Y partners with Building Community to increase prevention initiatives

CCC&Y is excited to partner with Building Community.  Leadership expansion is an important pillar of Self-Healing communities.  It is our intent to increase voice, connection and partnership throughout the county through this very targeted service.  We have engaged Rene to help increase our reach for prevention initiatives, support our child abuse and substance abuse prevention strategies across the county and to assist with increasing our NEAR-informed (neuroscience, epigenetics, ACES and Resiliency) capacity

Connections Spotlight: Self-Healing Communities Update

CCC&Y hosted more than 300 individuals in Flagstaff this October in order to be a part of a day-long presentation with internationally known child-welfare expert, Kevin Campbell.  An additional live-stream site was set up in Page which served an additional eight guests.

This past week, CCC&Y conducted two focus group follow ups for a total of 43 individuals, plus board members Andrea Meronuck and Cliff Binkley as moderators and ED Virginia Watahomigie in attendance.

Connections Spotlight: CCC&Y presents successful ‘Self-Healing Communities’ event

More than 300 people filled the High Country Conference Center to hear Kevin Campbell’s presentation on “Self-Healing Communities” on Oct. 29 in Flagstaff. The event was also streamed live to audience members at Encompass Behavioral Health Services in Page.

This day was about acknowledgment and cultural shift in healing, said Virginia Watahomigie, executive director of the Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth.

Connections Spotlight: CCC&Y’s 9th Annual Flagstaff Early Childhood Fair to be held Sept. 28 at Flagstaff High School

In celebration of young children and to support Flagstaff’s Festival of Science, CCC&Y’s 9thAnnual Early Childhood Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at Flagstaff High School, 400 W. Elm St., Flagstaff.

Because of our wonderful sponsors and volunteers, there continues to be no charge to table at this event.  More exciting, this year we will continue to be in the Flagstaff Festival of Science passport, in addition to other advertising, so we expect this to be a great event for all vendors.
