CCC&Y Board President Andrea Meronuck among Arizona Capitol Times’ ‘2023 Women Achievers of Arizona’

Andrea Meronuck, Clinical Director of Northland Family Help Center in Flagstaff, was among Arizona Capitol Times’ “2023 Women Achievers of Arizona” winners announced on Sept. 19, 2023.

“2023 Women Achievers of Arizona celebrates the accomplishments of top women in numerous fields. Amidst a challenging year, these leaders persevered and excelled. Their collective work helps Arizonans today and prepares the state for a flourishing future. The Achievers will also be profiled in a special edition of the Arizona Capitol Times,” the newspaper reported.

“This year’s event to honor the winners will be held Oct. 24 at the Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Below are the honorees in their respective categories. The Arizona Capitol Times editorial staff had no input on the nominations.”

The 2023 Women Achievers of Arizona were nominated by readers.

Meronuck is currently serving as Board President, Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth.

“I serve with CCC&Y because the coalition is a place where the community can come together and explore a shared passion for the wellbeing of children in the county, and take action toward our collective goals of a thriving community. Together we are able to creatively make space for efforts toward healing what needs to be healed, and as well as make space for growing a greater experience of safety, prosperity, connection, confidence, and joy in the youth of our community.”

Connections Spotlight — CCC&Y seeks to connect community with help through variety of resource guides

COCONINO COUNTY — Whether it’s connecting families with local representatives from the Coconino County Health & Human Services’ Women’s, Infants and Children (WIC) program, to helping foster care families learn about potential scholarship programs for their youth, resource guides provide a valuable assistance to residents throughout Coconino County and Northern Arizona.

To spread the word about these valuable information options, CCC&Y has compiled a listing and link to a variety of resource guides throughout the region including CCC&Y’s created Page/Fredonia and Tuba City resource guides and the recently updated Williams Area Community Resource Guide.

Connections Spotlight — CCC&Y supports positive experience for families at Flagstaff Festival of Science (Sept. 22-Oct. 1)

Resilience is not something we expect from children it is something we support in children, families, and communities. Making sure every child and family has the opportunity for exposure to science, role models, caring adults and a big world is what makes this so special.

Connection Spotlight — CCC&Y provides variety of free online training including ‘Thriving Families’

The Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth provides a variety of free online training programs for parents, caregivers and all community members.

Our free Thriving Families webinar is a great starting place for parents, caregivers and community members brand new to the topics such as brain development, adverse childhood experiences, resilience and mindfulness.  It is a great jumping off place to go deeper in knowledge and support through the rest of our library of webinars.

With thousands of views across our various topics, we are sure there is something for all community members and professionals.  Whether you are seeking the best info for your family, your community or a program you work for, get a taste for our research supported prevention and community work.

Connections Spotlight — CCC&Y’s Trauma-Informed System Change grant members meet to discuss next steps

FLAGSTAFF — Members of the Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth’s Trauma-Informed System Change grant program met recently to discuss the next steps in developing a mental model change ensuring trauma-informed and resilience information is understood at the City of Flagstaff and Coconino County levels and enacted as policy change. 

The goal of the program is to improve patient engagement, treatment adherence, health outcomes and provider and staff wellness.

CCC&Y will be working with city and county officials to develop, implement and institutionalize the System Change over the next three years as part of its $175,000 Vitalyst Health Foundation’s System Change Grant. The Coalition was one of four one of four organizations in Arizona to be selected for the grant this year. 

A workgroup has begun planning on the rollout of the three-year program including raising awareness of trauma and resilience-informed practices at the city and county level through the use of surveys, meeting with leaders and staff training during year one; fine-tuning that awareness outreach and training program during year two; and ensuring those practices are institutionalized into city and county policies and sharing the successes of the System and Policy Change effort with partners statewide.

The Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth was one of four organizations in Arizona to be selected this year for the Vitalyst Health Foundation’s System Change Grant. 

We will receive $175,000 over three years to develop, in conjunction with the City of Flagstaff and Coconino County, a mental model change ensuring trauma-informed and resilience information is understood at City and County levels and enacted as policy change. The goal is to improve patient engagement, treatment adherence, health outcomes and provider and staff wellness.

Education Spotlight — CCC&Y, school partners, to present ‘Community Healing Change — Training, Meal & Discussion’ in recognition of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. See more local, state and national education news here

The Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth — in partnership with Fredonia Elementary School, Puente de Hozho in Flagstaff and the Page Unified School District — will present the training series “Community Healing Change — Training, Meal & Discussion” in recognition of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

You can register to attend the live viewing parties where food, discussion and prizes are available.

The Fredonia training will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 17. Register with Jeanne Crookston: jeanne@fredonia.org

Connections Spotlight — CCC&Y fondly remembers the life of founder Florence Mae Karlstrom

CCC&Y and community members fondly remember the life of founder Florence Mae Karlstrom who passed away on Jan. 8, 2023 in Amherst, Mass. She had recently celebrated her 100th birthday on Dec. 22, 2022.

“Many of us in Flagstaff remember Florence. The community we live in today has roots in her work, founding CCC&Y, serving on the FUSD Board, supporting United Way and the vision of early childhood education and development,” wrote consultant and coach Kerry Blume, former president and CEO of the United Way of Northern Arizona.

“I am so sorry to learn of Florence’s passing. … Florence also championed women’s rights and was instrumental in the budding women in history programs at NAU in the early 1970’s which included a cross department collaboration with Peg Morley and Katherine Nutt. Her commitment for building a better world led to focusing on children and the most vulnerable and resulted in the creation of what is now CCC&Y. She was a strong advocate for early childhood education. I worked on her successful campaign for FUSD school board and her unsuccessful campaign for state senate. A consummate community builder who led with compassion, intellect and kindness. During her 100 years many of us got to experience that warm smile and her grace.  A life well lived. Her memory will always be a blessing,” wrote Coconino County District 1 Supervisor Patrice Horstman.

“The acknowledgement of all of Florence’s accomplishments in her lifetime is truly amazing. I was never aware of Florence’s beliefs in life. But now being aware of them, they don’t surprise me. If you looked deep you would know that she was always giving of herself in a compassionate, love filled way, no matter what she did. In working with Florence most closely as we worked together on the school board, I found a woman who was strong in her beliefs, not afraid to share them and if necessary challenge others on theirs.  At the same time, her quiet love of all of those she worked with and for came through. There were always those times when she would come to me to be sure all was alright. I knew she truly cared and loved those she worked with, no matter what may be going on. She continually demonstrated her faith of love and hope by the way she lived, whether we were aware of the reason or not.  Children were always a top priority. I now wonder if we were all her children, no matter the age. How proud as a founder of the Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth she would be today, knowing of their many accomplishments. For us and our children she not only met the challenge of life, but found opportunity for the young and old in all that she did,” wrote Julianne Hartzell, past board president and member of CCC&Y’s Action & Outreach Committee.

Connections Spotlight — Geile-Gonzalez, Rosensweet join CCC&Y Board of Directors

Kimberlie Geile-Gonzalez and Laura Rosensweet have joined a talented group of individuals serving on the CCC&Y Board of Directors.

Geile-Gonzalez, a retired educator and a Realtor who is with Realty Executives Flagstaff, has served with a variety of nonprofit organizations in the region including the AZ Community Foundation of Flagstaff, Northland Family Help Center, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Arizona, and the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce Education and Workforce committee. She will serve on the Coalition’s Prevention Council.

“I truly believe children are our best hope for the future. I taught elementary students for over 20 years and have seen children and families struggle with adverse situations. CCC&Y provides a voice in the community for those who have no voice. I am looking forward to working with a coalition that provides opportunities to help children and families thrive and grow.”

Rosensweet is the Community Impact Manager Northern Arizona for Education Forward and serves on the Coalition’s Action & Outreach Committee. 

“My entire career has been spent helping our most vulnerable youth be connected to education and services through my work as a teacher in behavior intervention.  I’m excited to serve on the CCC&Y board and work with the community to support families and kids in living their best lives.”
